ALUMS ENJOY COOL CAR SHOW
Representing SULTANS Long Beach Car Club, with "Candy Girl," Cool Car Show entrant, Duane R. Barbee emailed Monday morning, April 18:
"Just wanted to write & let you know how much I enjoyed yesterday & congratulate the Cool Car Show team and students for a sensational and successful car show. I know it is a lot of work; we (the SULTANS) do a couple every year & pulling one together, I describe as frantic, frustrating, and in the end, fantastic. I met a lot of neat people, ate way too much good food, bought a lot of stuff for my grandkids, enjoyed the music & had a genuinely relaxing fun day and look forward to next year's show. I also want to thank the Council for the trophy--it sincerely means a lot to me & Candy Girl. So till next year, have a great rest of '05.
Duane. . .GO SAINTS!"
'Twas indeed a wonderful day; great time checking out all the Classic Cars, enjoying the superb sounds of Phil Carillo, '84, and his Steel Drum Band, followed by memorable Mariachi Players and fantastic Folklorico Dancers. SAHS Alumni enjoyed mixin' it up with faculty, staff, parents & students, CCS entrants, vendors, and visitors; sharing stories, sampling SA parents' delectable entrees in an inviting covered-dining area--festooned with balloons, streamers, and parent-designed floral centerpieces. Everyone enjoyed movin' & groovin', viewing cars, buying vendors' wares, CCS t-shirts, snapping up fast-selling tickets for daylong prize giveaways, sippin' in the beer garden, enjoying children's delightful play area--complete with jumper (a real hit with the pre-SAHS set!)
Some Alums seen at the scene: SAHS President Regina Holden Rushing, '67, overseeing prizes and drawings. (With nimble repartee, winning numbers called by Phil C.) Alumni Director Pat O'Shea Kelly, '51, sold 50/50 tickets. (Won by car show entrant, Jim Kelly, of Playa Del Rey, whose wife is also Pat Kelly.)
Mark J. Hepp, '51, entered his 1964-1/2 Mustang Coupe and won First Place in the Muscle Car Division. "My first Car Show Trophy!" Congratulations, classmate Mark; keep coming back! Another Alum Cool Car Show entrant was Joe Nedza, '68--hope to see you again next year, Joe!
Stopping by and signing in at Alumni table were, Judith (Wiater) '64 & Jim Brennan, '65. (Draping "SAHS Alumni" roll of stickers around themselves, Jim & Judy posed for unique Alum photoshoot!) Anticipating 85th Anniversary Welcome Home, September 17, Judith (Hall of Fame 2001) said Class of 1964 looking forward to making event an occasion for their Fall Reunion. What a great idea! Joining Jim and Judith for a looksee at all the cool cars, was '64 classmate, Judy Gray Hess--valued member of 85th Anniversary Planning Committee. Sidebar: Class of 1964 meets last Sundays, 10 - Noon, Belmont Shore Starbucks, 2nd St. (across from J-I-B)--coming up next Sunday, April 24.
Also spotted checking out cars and enjoying the day, was Pat Metzger, '61--another valued member of 85th Anniversary Planning Committee. Pat Farrelly Kuhn, '50, signed in at Alumni table, and mentioned Class of 1950 chums meeting first Tuesdays at Pollys on Katella, 9:00, for a gathering of the FOSALS (Former St. Anthony Ladies). Pat's husband chimed in that the men also met same time, same place; calling themselves the ROMEOS (Retired Old Men Eating Out.)
Among a wonderful variety of vendors, (how about that terrific Tiki Hut!)were Alumni Donna (Sisemore) '52 & Dominic Colamonico, '51, displaying unique craft items; joined by daughter-in-law, Yvonne, specializing in Cookie Lee Jewelry. D & D were ably assisted by grandchildren, who were also displaying their own crafty items.
